Gallery Walk
A Gallery Walk is a tool of assessment that allows students to become experts in one aspect of an area of study and then teach it to other students. This taps into higher level thinking processes and increases the chances of student learning. I chose to include the Gallery Walk in my Romeo and Juliet unit to teach the students about themes. In small groups students read two acts of the play specifically investigating one theme of the play. The students then created an informative poster to teach their classmates about how their theme was present and affected the meaning of the play. I believe this was a very successful lesson as students gained a better understanding of theme and how it affects our understanding of a play or story. I have included this lesson in my portfolio because I believe it exemplifies my teaching practices as it is interactive and challenge students to initiate higher level thinking.
